Svalbard - A Motion Graphic

Svalbard - A Motion Graphic
This motion graphic project showcases the breakdown for creating motion graphics to accompany a news style video.

My selected news story was sharing information about a collection of islands called Svalbard in the North.
After researching about Svalbard and developing a news style video I began sketching out different graphics that would fit the theme, and help in visualizing the information shared.

Icy,
Cold,
Darkness,
Daylight,

These all needed to be represented.
Into Adobe Illustrator
I took my sketches into Adobe Illustrator and began creating my assets, layer by layer so that they could move independently as needed to accurately portray the information shared throughout the video.
I needed a way to show measurement.

With my topic and information it needed to be a measurement of time.

After bouncing around a few ideas of how this passage of time could be communicated visually as clearly and simply as possible a calendar seemed the best option.

In order to show the two different types of year clearly I used different colors that slowly appeared as the time of year was mentioned in the video. (Below you can see the calendar and layers beneath used to give the effect seen in the video)
Draft
Below is a draft video of my news story and accompanying motion graphics.
Feedback
After sharing my draft with fellow creatives I received feedback regarding the size and location of my water and ice graphics in the beginning of the video and adjusted those accordingly.

I also received thoughts on ways to make the Northern Lights have a more natural shape and movement. After receiving this feedback I experimented with several different tools and techniques to strengthen this aspect of my motion graphic.
Final Video
Through this process I was able to create a video with accompanying graphics that visually communicated the information in a clear way.
